Money

This is how many dollars you can buy with one pound. It's been $2 for £1 most of the time we've been here, but in the last month or two its dropped fast to $1.50 for £1. Someone at work helpfully pointed out that my salary is now worth 25% less!

If things keep going this way, I'm doing my Christmas shopping here!

Also: It started snowing here! With no Halloween or Thanksgiving in this country to divide up the rest of the year, the relentless march of Christmas season is here earlier than ever!

Then again, if you have any money left in an American account, you could start furiously withdrawing it in the UK from an ATM, hang onto it until a time when the dollar weakens again, and then change it back over and net a little extra something.

Some people do that for a living. When I was an undergraduate, I asked my roommate, who was an economics major about it, and he verified that some people's whole job is just to trade currencies. At the time I thought it was amazing and a bit unseemly - some kind of spinning money out of the air. No actual productive work involved.

Of course, we would be doing it right now, if only we had the money. I don't think it'll be too worthwhile for me :(
