The English like to go for walks in the countryside. They do it today, they did it in Jane Austen's day. A walk around the garden is a lovely activity. Why?
The answer, I think, is that the British really appreciate good weather, because it is so rare. They just want to be out in it. And that, I think, is one reason long walks in the country are so important that you can legally cut across people's property if a path goes through it.
Second point of the day. In America, 50% of the populace thinks the world is less than 10,000 years old and that man was created pretty much as he is today. In the UK, Charles Darwin is on the back of the £10 note. And Adam Smith (father of economics!) is on the back of the £20 note. How sweet is that.
