Snakes on a Plate and In The Continuum

Last weekend Matt and I saw Snakes on a Plane. (If you don't know what that is, you've been under a rock in a sulfur pit on Mars.) And it was everything I expected it to be and worse. Of course, Matt loved it. The key to going to a movie like that is you have to go when there's a good crowd. In DC right now, because of that "crime emergency" back in July (12 murders in the first 14 days of the month="crime emergency") there is an ongoing city ordinance that kids under 18 can't be out in the city at all past 10 without a parent. That includes movies of course and we went to a 9:20PM showing, so the kiddos weren't there to lift the vibe up that much more. But it was still a good crowd. If you know/saw the line, "I am getting SICK of these MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES on this MOTHERFUCKING PLANE!" that was the best part of the whole movie right there and the crowd cheered for it.

There is a restaurant in Bethesda that was doing a special prix fixe dinner two nights last week that they called "Snakes on a Plate" and, unfortunately, nothing was made of real snake. It was all food that looks like snakes, like soba noodles.

Also this week, we saw a play called "In The Continuum" which is about two women, one a 19-year old African American, and the other a middle-class Zimbabwean wife and mother. They both find out they are pregnant and have been infected with HIV/AIDS by the men who supposedly love them and you can guess there are a lot of issues that come up thereafter. It was a really powerful and disturbing show and also really very humerous and lighthearted at times. If you get a chance to see it, we highly recommend it. They just came back from a tour of Africa and they're doing a tour of the major US cities now.
